Tactics on BL reds
 

After too many trips spent fumbling around trying to catch trout at Big Lake, I'd like to learn more about how to consistently catch reds in that area.

Seems like we always catch a couple while "trout fishing," but to specifically target reds, is there more reason in fishing
grassy points, deep ledges, structure visible on surface, jetties, etc?

Not looking for specific spots, looking for a better understanding of what a redfish does all day, where, and why.

I struggle my self looking for reds. I basically just look for moving water and bait. But like you, I don't know what to really look for except to hope to catch them shallow during high tide or funnels coming off shallow areas when the tide is going down...plan on spending some time figuring this out this year.

Redfish are VERY current / water movement oriented... and sometimes those currents are only perceptible to the redfish. Otherwise areas with structure that have crabs, shrimp, and/or shad (mendaden or other shad); those are their favorite foods.

Those guys with Hackberry Rod and Gun sure know how to put it on the redfish.

"STRUCTURE" ??

As in oyster reefs? Im no pro on BL but for the most part I didn't think there was much in the way of "structure" in BL

Awesome stuff on the bull reds, Ill put it to the test.
Is there anything in the way of just general red fishing I should be reading up on/focusing on?
Used to go to the washout area at edge of black lake and catch them easily as the water was always moving out into the marsh. Not even sure if that place is around anymore(?), but I can't ever seem to predict when the tides will be moving based on what the nearest tide schedules say, etc.

Any help much appreciated.

go download the realtide app for iphone. it calculates tide based on your location and the location of the closest active stations. It's not 100% obviously but it works pretty well I have found.

Damn...I hadn't seen that post before, but that's what I'm talking about. Fishermen helping other fishermen. Cudos to you for helping out other fishermen. There's just no reason why we can't share area info, tides, gear, etc.
