Anyone heading to VBay this weekend (03/14, 03/15)

I've finally got a weekend where the wife and the weather are sort of cooperating. This will be my first trip on my boat since Thanksgiving (had our first child just before then).

If anyone has any secret spots or tips they'd like to share, I'm all ears! (PM me if you don't want everyone to know...lol!) What should I look for (tides, clear water, birds) and what is the best bait or lure this time of year (live bait, top water, etc.)

I've got all the right gear, but I am still a novice (and loving every minute of it!!).
I'm not sure how many weekends I will get before summer, so I am trying to make the best of this one.

I'm sure all this rain isn't going to make fishing easy. Good luck!

There's gonna be a lot of fresh water in all waters. Although im not familiar with VB, I am sure its like Big Lake and the salt line will be moved to the south more than normal. So I would fish on the south end.

Good catfishing going on this time of the year. Hit any canals that dump into the intracoastal and deep bends in the bayous inside marsh island.

Hell Hole and the Worm are producing some reds....with the high river and rain there will be a lot of fresh water..

That's what I figured. The rain chances are smaller this weekend, but I been fearing all of the fresh water pouring in.
Hell if its just a boat ride, its still a good day in my books!
I just want to get my boat on the water to knock the winter off of it. (It brings down my stress levels and blood pressure...lol)

I'll be out there on Saturday, but everybody I know that was out there last weekend got skunked, including me. And it was the same thing then...rain all week followed by decent weather on the weekend. All this rain during the week leads to lousy catching on the weekend. Great fishing though. I could ride in the boat, soak up the sun, and drink beer all day.

Not familiar with the worm? Where is that?

Has anybody made it out to Tiger Shoal in the last few weeks? With all of this rain, that might be the only place to find salt.

Best fishing weather of the year. It was about 72, sunny, and no wind until mid afternoon. We probably ran 90 or 100 miles. Hit Bayou Fearman, which didn't even have bait. Hit the reefs outside of the pass, nothing. Made the run all the way out to Tiger Shoal, mostly because it's been a while and I wanted to get back out there. Nothing again. I had a novice with me in the boat. He had a beautiful bull red hit at Tiger Shoal. I told him to keep that tip up, but he put it down and let the thing run under the boat. Oh well. We ran around the south of Marsh Island and caught the afternoon east side. Found a cut with some bait movement. My buddy was fishing shrimp and I had finger mullet. I saw a nice little hotbed right at the water line, and I told my buddy to throw right there. He pulled in a flounder and two reds in the three minutes before I switched to shrimp. One of the reds was 25 inches. The other looked like a 15.5, but you angle that tail fin and presto, he was 16. But, as fast as we found them, they were gone. Just glad I could put my buddy on some fish, and its a good thing he was there, cuz I got skunked. But we ate well for a night anyway.

By the way, talked to three other boats at the launch, and nobody else had found any. Guess we were at the right place at the right time. Couldn't have been better weather out there, though. Great day for fishing.

This weekend went much better than I expected with all the rain this past week. Me and my boy fished both Saturday and Sunday. We had to work to catch 2 reds, 2 flounder, 2 black drum, 2 blue cats. We were frustrated because we lost approx. 8 fish...a couple nice reds broke off right at the boat. Sunday we got out there early. It was a foggy morning and the gnats were HORRIBLE! The whole boat was covered in dead gnats. The fishing was pretty good so gnats didn't bother us too much. We caught 8 reds early but the bite shut down when the tide started rolling. We tried to fill our limit of reds but couldn't do it. We ended with 8 reds, 1 blue cat and 1 channel cat.
