Honest advice needed.

My dogs killed a nieghbors deer over the weekend.

these are not agressive animals, retrievers for hunting.........it appears thier game instincts took over.

They gentleman that owned the deer restrained himself, and did not kill my dogs. I am happy about that.

He did not want to talk to me this weekend, was too angry. I get that for sure.

He has made overtures to the police that each deer "sells" for 3K.

I want to be fair, but I do not want to get taken advantage of.
He has never sold an animal.

these deer are young and small, about 80 pounds.

please understand, I know I have a level of responsibility here, not trying to be a schmuck......

Advice?? Guidance??

Man, a quick Google search makes $3k sound kind of cheap. Most places I found started at $4500 for a 2014 doe.

May go look at this site.

Is it a whitetail or exotic, buck or doe?

fishinpox 05-26-2015 05:59 PM

Is he a breeder?
Trophy breeder?

You say he hasn't sold any so I'm guessing it's a hobby for him ?

Hopefully it's not trophy breeding because people pay HUGE money for theses genetics / deer.

I know this isn't the answer you want to hear but I would go visit the guy and give him your number , tell him to call you when he's ready to talk because you want to make it right , and leave it at that . Let him cool off . When he calls just ask him what he thinks is fair as compensation . If it sounds crazy , calmly ask for some justification . Explain you want to treat him fair but also want to be treated fairly so you can both move on

simplepeddler 05-26-2015 06:03 PM

he is a hobby breeder, brand new.........white tail
Pox that is exactly where we are now, the police gave him my number and he called me today......

I wanted some input before I called him back..........

I have a good friend that was a trophy breeder up until about a year ago. Got out of the business because of new laws about transporting out of state. Anyway, if your guys deer have the trophy genes then they are worth at least what he said. Also, I think Pox gave you some great advice.

File a liability claim on your homeowner policy to compensate him for his loss.

Juciy 05-26-2015 08:26 PM

If you know your dogs did the act, then there is not much choice to make sure the guy gets compensated.

Its just strange on how two dogs can get into a high fence.

fishinpox 05-26-2015 08:44 PM

Yea how did the dogs get in ?

Not unless you want to pay a fortune in future premiums as long as you own dogs. Besides your deductible is probably 1k at least.
Pay the man and move on. Crap happens

I know these folks.........I don't think they are lying to me for sure.......but it's awkward......one of my dogs is a English Cocker......might wiegh 30 pounds.

The other is my Wachtelhund......he is about 65 pounds, but only 26 inches tall, but pound for pound powerful.

I imagine he went under the fence somehow and the little one followed.

We talked tonight and he is being reasonable.......he had the idea of filing on insurance......I'm gonna check into that for sure.

Wants me to come visit him tomorrow at his place.......

Fair point

r u the same guy who was selling the turtles on e-bay?:*****:

my honest opinion is that he should just kill your dogs and beat you untill he is over it.

then call it even.

good luck

Peddler, I believe you to be a stand up guy, hard worker and a suscessfull business man.

But my honest opinion is to be very amiable with this gentalmen, try to turn off your "work" mode by possibly negotiating. If he says the deer is worth $6,000 then write him a $6,000 check; your not in a good position to negiotiate.

Pay the man, patch the relationship and maintain a positive public image.

Good luck

The only thing I would recommend is to get the figure in writing. In other words he needs to sign something saying this is the full amount of his damages and he's releasing you from any more liability in the situation. You don't want hm coming back after you've paid saying it wasn't the whole amount.

BuckingFastard 05-27-2015 06:34 AM

shoot, ive watched tiny dogs tear a new a$$ in a hog. probably wouldnt take much at all for one to devour a deer. but how in the world did they get into a high fence?

brooks05 05-27-2015 06:47 AM

This is no deductible on a liability claim. Only a claim for first part damages, your own. As far as premiums, unless you have a history of claims any increase in premiums will not even be close to $3000. Most companies will not see this type of incident as a vicious dog matter unless the dog has a prior history.

No! he's not the turtle guy. Is this really the "honest advice" you're offering? Come on man.

alphaman 05-27-2015 08:02 AM

Being that im a police officer the 1st thing I would do get some kind of proof that your dogs did it! Before I pay anything or sign anything.

(Look for other animal tracks around his fence line!!!!)

does he have proof did he actually see your 2 dogs physically killing the deer. If not he has to prove it. There are 2 many scams going around!!#

(You siad He hasn't sold 1 right?

Here's a thought, "well maybe since I can't sell 1 I'll make up a story and say my neighbors dogs killed them and I'll just get my money back that I paid for it by accusing them and just get out the business.)

It could have been a wild animal, any animal with teeth and instincts besides your dogs. Bc remember your dogs are the ONLY animals in the AREA that knows and have been EYEING those deer!😈😆

You have a little bread /business onwner maybe he trying to blame you and he probably thinks you will pay with not problem guilty mind Frame.

Just a thought here
