Here's a few pics of our dive trip from Wednesday to the Verm. blocks about 32 miles south of Rollover Bayou in pecan island..

Me will 2 nice 16-18" snaps.. Then my son Cody(Rt.) and his friend James Gleason (left) with 2 real nice 40-45 # cobia's.

Notice in the close up pic my sons ling had swim into a loop of rope, with a knot in the rope .. Maybe when it was smaller??? It got up against her pectoral fins and could not come off, since fish don't swim backward's.

And as she grow, it started to grew into her skin... She probably would have eventually died. All this is an educated guess of course.

Pretty neat, I'll be out there tomorrow with a rod and reel though.

Water 16 miles is 45'. 32 miles is 72-75'.. 40-42 miles out will put U in around 90 95'..

I was standing on the bottom my dive computer said 73'...

"Let um land" must not fish that far out of he thinks thew water is only 35-40'.

Do you tie off to something when you shoot a large ling or just hold on and just do your best not to let him drag you around too much?

I have done a good bit of spear fishing but always while free diving, never while SCUBA diving. Sometimes, what seems like the perfect shot will not stone a fish.

We always stayed in groups in case someone shot a fish that they could not bring to the surface then someone else would be there to dive down and grab the spear gun to fight the fish until someone was able to get another spear in the fish or get him to the surface. We never shot any fish that were as strong as a ling that size.

We mostly killed geouper, snapper, hog fish, trigger fish, barracuda, and other reef fish.

I was just curious if you tied yourself to the leg of the rig or just hung on for the ride. I guess this would be more dangerous in much deeper water.

Mako

Yea.. We hold on to a cross member, sit on cross member. Once U spear that fish you got to get to him and get him under control. Rip his gills out etc.
