Snapper Season

As the recreational season comes to a close, what licenses, permits or whatever else is needed to go after red snapper during the Charter Guide Season?
I have researched this a bit but want to make sure, am not missing anything.

If you are going with a guide all you need is your regular saltwater fishing license. If you are trying to target them on your boat you need a federal reef fish permit and a captains license

What is needed to get the Federal Reef Fish Permit? Is that expensive?

Yes. You have to find one for sale first. Then the market price has doubled since amendment 40 has passed. They are going for $10-12k right now from what I've seen.

WOW, this is crazy, so many regs from the Feds, almost not even worth going out the State water boundary, never know what law you may be breaking.

It's an absolute shame that we live right on the coast of one of the most productive fisheries in the world and they make it to where we can't go out and enjoy it or take advantage of its resources. A shame I tell you!

I went Snapper fishing out of Venice on Friday and the snapper fishing is stupid easy! The captain on the boat even made the comment that with all the adult snapper on most platforms nowdays that it's really starting to hurt the grouper fishery. He stated that the big snapper eat most if not all of the juvenile fish of all species.
The current federal laws are a slap in the face to all recreational fishermen of all the gulf coast states.

UR landing permit is free, big daddy.. go get it on WLF website.

meaux fishing 06-08-2015 03:35 PM

Landing permit is free, but only good in state waters so unless you are going way east it does you no good. You can catch snapper out of Venice and possibly grand isle/fourchon depending on time of year in state waters

pathfinder2200 06-08-2015 05:46 PM

What? Thought you were just getting going!

biggun 06-08-2015 06:15 PM

Bob.. I'm Sorry, I'm not calling U out... U are misinformed. But U need a landing permit if u are fishing federal / state waters and landing your boat at any public, or private landing, camp etc. on the LA coast.

Here it is straight from the creel survey I just finished.

"The ROLP is a free permit you will need if you intend to possess or land the following species or species groups: Tunas, Swordfish, Billfish, Snapper, Amberjacks, Grouper, Hinds, Cobia, Wahoo, and Dolphin."

Doesn't matter if it's state or federal waters...

his question was about snapper and not during the rec season

I left out the words "for snapper", because I thought it was understood

Answered my question, I do have the Off-shore landing permit. Only thing lacking is the Federal Reef Fish permit, which I have learned today are very expensive to have. Permit is needed for Guides to take charters for red snapper during the charter season.
