Gun Safe Question
I'm in the market for a gun safe for my home. I will be building a new home in about a year or so and I'm thinking about just putting the gun safe that I buy in my garage for now then putting it in my new home after its built. My question is, will the humidity here in LA be a major problem being kept in my garage? I don't really have room for it in my house right now but I'm currently keeping my guns under my bed and I'm tired of them collecting dust down there. Plus I have a two year old and another baby due any day now and want to be safe.

I know plenty of gun safes kept in Garages, shops and even sheds. Not recommended, but they work just fine. Use some sort of dehumidifier, I prefer ones that absorb moisture rather than heat up the safe. Most "safes" are just pretty smash and grab deterrents and are rather easy to get into fancy looking security cabinets (if they don't steal the whole thing). I have bought most of my safes from auctions, the DEA has some really nice safes, so do old stores going out of business. Usually they end up at an auction.

If you are building a new house, look at getting a safe room put in, it isn't that expensive. I know someone who did a really nice vault for $7,000 with good pre planning.

I have seen several houses that have a safe room under the stairs. I would love to do that.

If someone breaks into my house they are going to need a safe room!

^^^This is the main reason that I purchased mine a few years ago. I got the Stack-on 14 gun fireproof, with electronic entry. I don't have a huge arsenal, so its been ideal so far. You can convert one side of the safe with shelves to hold handguns, ammo, etc. Its located indoors so I don't have to worry much about humidity. If you keep yours outside, you should probably get a small dehumidifier. |
