That Time of Year

As soon as the first cold arrives you can almost set your clocks to the speckled trout. They've begun to show up with the arrival of the shrimp and the birds aren't lying. I figured the hot redfish action we've had for the last few months would be slowing down but that is simply not the case.

This morning was the first dead calm day we've had in awhile and we got right down to business. Birds diving and shrimp jumping everywhere but I paid no attention to them for the first hour of fishing. I snuck over to an oyster reef where I knew the fish would be bigger. Sure enough some good trout were pulling down the corks. After that played out is when we started bird fishing. The fish were much smaller under the birds but when the birds left I dropped the power pole and we kept catching. The bigger fish remained in the same location and we iced up around 50. The guys today were from North Carolina and really wanted some hard hitting redfish, so we headed over to the hot spot. After I got the water chummed with the crab claws and tops, the reds turned on and we caught a few big bulls. When that played out we went and found some slots.

The fishing so far this fall has been excellent and I expect the trout bite to get better and better with each cold front. Soon my dock shots will become mostly silver and dots. See yall later
