pogie meal for baiting shrimp?
I know shrimp season is right around the corner, this will only be my 3rd year going out and catching them. ive been using pogie meal mixed with flour and water, but is there any other type of bait that's not as messy? I wanna say last year I over heard someone say they were using the square cubes that people may use in crawfish traps, has anyone heard this?
also has anyone tried making a batch of pogie meal and freezing it, then when you go out just let it thaw and scoop out enough to form a ball? just trying to eliminate having to make this stuff up while on the water. |
Yes there are pellets that I have seen people use. I don't know where they get them.... maybe a feed supply store.
I had a friend till me he use to make "cookie" size patties and freeze them on a cookie sheet and them put some in a baggie. When out shrimping, he would take the frozen [or partly frozen] patties and throw them out in the water. He said being flat, he would not "catch" them in the cast net. |
I buy rabbit feed at the feed store and throw it out all around my boat then wait about 30 minutes and start throwing the net. I have always done pretty good.

Range cubes for cows. Get them at any feed store, they work almost as good as pogie meal

I think they eat the plant protein in them, but I'm not sure.

Range cubes are good for baiting catfish in freshwater also.

I think most people get it at feed stores. I know gulfway in kaplan has it.
