Crawfish Prices?

It is that time of year when the prices start to fall. Prior to Mardi Gras our prices over here in Pensacola were $5 per pound.

They have now fallen to $4.50 locally purchased.
My son is coming over from Slidell this weekend and bringing some to boil, his price yesterday is $2.89.

What have you guys seen and where?

Thanks
BT

Around Lafayette/Youngsville, they have been $35-$37 for 5 pounds, boiled. Only $7.40 per pound! But they were good! Starting to come down a little.

Damn! That's high!

I've talked with a few farmers in the last week or two. They are having a lot of problems. Most are getting $2/lb or less. Some were told to stop running traps because the plants weren't buying any. There has been a lot of dead crawfish. Plants are losing 40-60% of what they bring in in some cases because the crawfish are dying.

Why would they be dying?
Too long in the sack prior to processing?

Nah, I don't think the weather has been good. Low oxygen in the water. Old crawfish from last year still being caught.

Just a number of factors.

We had a few very cold days this year, and now its real warm and everything is greening up

Plus all the high water we are getting

Probably going to negatively affect the crawfish prices and keep them high

Anybody ever pour a little Ex-Lax in their icechest to purge crawfish? Has to work

T-TOP 02-27-2018 01:33 PM

Works great just tell em it's hot chocolate though so they'll drink it.

Heb

Talked to the seafood manager at heb and he said the are projecting them to by high all year. 99 cents on Sunday no more. He told me that our heb aren?t buying them anymore a truck come and what they sale they sale and what is left they send back to a wholesaler. Heb bought them in the past

prices normally drop after Easter Sunday, don't know if that will happen this year.

redaddiction 02-27-2018 11:45 PM

They?ve fallen $1 per pound in the past week here in Lafayette area. If the supply gets cranking they will have no choice but to keep lowering the price. Whether it?s before Easter or not.

2.25/# live here in lafayette last weekend. Straight field run mix. Boiled a 30# sack on Sunday as a warm up run. Size was ok for this time of the season. Nothing to brag about.

Boiled looks to be 4-5$/# at to-go places and 6-7/# at the local restaurants.

Hard to image low oxygen in the water considering all the rains we've been having.

MathGeek 02-28-2018 08:47 AM

I just shut up, pay whatever, and am grateful to have them.

Me too, but when the price falls more, I can invite more.
We start with one sack, then two and three, and then have a yard full of souls.

Also always add that Boiled Boston Butt, at 99 cent a pound to expand the bellies

fishwater 03-01-2018 02:24 AM

Not low oxygen causing them to die, they have been in a molt for 2 weeks. Any chance is weather, full moon, lots of rain and it sends them into one, we threw away about 300 lbs of dead loss in the last 2.5 weeks at my place. Size this week is great and started getting graded large today. Price will stay high to much demand for $1.00 lb nice size crawfish.
