Breaking News » Bywater man shoots, kills alleged garage burglar early Saturday

By The Times-Picayune

February 06, 2010, 9:33AM

A Bywater resident shot and killed an apparent burglar who activated a motion sensor in the resident's garage early Saturday, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

No charges have been filed against the unidentified shooter, though an investigation involving the District Attorney's Office is ongoing, Officer Janssen Valencia said in a news release. The name of the alleged robber also has not been released.

Authorities say the resident of a home in the 600 block of Independence Street got a call from his or her home-security company around midnight Saturday that a motion sensor indicated activity in a garage behind the house. One of the home's residents went to check out the scene, encountered the burglary suspect and shot him, Valencia said.

Fifth District officers responding to the burglary call found the suspect suffering from several bullet wounds to his body. Emergency medical technicians pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Homicide Detective Rob Long is in charge of the investigation. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111 or toll-free at 877.903.7867. Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to give their names or testify and can earn as much as $2,

How about the business owner from Kenner last weekend. While closing up shop, 3 armed masked negros attempted to rob him. He fought back, gaining control of the gun, shooting 2 of the 3, of which one had fatal injuries.

Now, that man is my hero!!!!!

You know, I really believe there would be alot less crime if citizens had the right to defend themselves with due diligence. If a criminal thinks you might be armed and could blast his arse away, he will not fool with you.

This should be made into a SB commercial so all the democrats in the city can see it. You know they going to be watching, might give them something to think about.

man i wish my neighbor would have got inside so there would have been a similar story in the american press, cops told me yesterday that if i was outside while he was and he came at me I would be within my rights to shoot him but I couldnt shoot him from inside the house if he was outside.

I guess I should have mentioned not to have to put up with all the beaurocratic red tape, like defense attorneys trying to find a way to make it look like your fault. Frivolous BS is what I'm talking about.

these days I do NOT count on the criminals to pick someone else.

we should ALL have a good fighting rifle/pistol handy

I agree.
I'd rather lose everything I own and sleep in jail a few years for killing some crack head criminal than to lose my wife or my dignity.

There will be an investigation, that's standard procedure...You do now have the right to "shoot to kill" if anyone is breaking into your property...if you don't kill them, THEN, they can sue you for everything you have... I was told by someone in law enforcement to make sure you shoot to kill, ask questions later...Bottom line, you on my property, you are threatening me or robbing me or going to inflict bodily harm, kiss it goodbye shorty; yo butt is toast...:work:
