I want to use a new device to connect my older NMEA 0183 GPS to the new NMEA 2000 net work the Suzuki DF300 came with......

It does work. I have seen it used on an older sportfish before. What unit are you trying to interface?

trying to get a Garmin 540s and the Lowrance (Suzuki) digital gauge interfacing.
I think the gauge model is a LMS or LMF 400??
