GPS Advice
Alright guys, the wife has agreed to get me a GPS for our anniversary at the end of this month. I am not going to be able to spend as much as I want but I have a couple of hundred to play with. I know I want a Garmin I am just not sure of what model. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

handheld? chartplotter? auto?

you tell me. I need something that will get me from point A and back. I need something that will have maps and I can add way points to. I am pretty ignorant about the matter. We have a handheld at work that I use on a regular basis. I am pretty sure I don't want a handheld.

Get one with Mapsource software that comes with it.
I have the Mapsource software on my laptop. When I get GPS numbers, I can put them in the software and download to the computer, or I can put them in the GPS and download them to the computer. Every time I change something, I save the changes to a USB drive and/or a CD. If anything goes south, I have the software to back up. Or if I get a new GPS, I can use the numbers I already have to download to the new GPS, I don't have to input each set of numbers, one at a time into the GPS, I just dump them all at one time. And I have the maps in the software, so I can see where I am going before I get in the boat. |
