Achieving higher speed with surface drives has a lot to do with the boat as well as the motor. It needs to have a flat smooth bottom with longitude ribs. Our gatortail rig runs 32 with 2 guys, a dog, and all our gear. The motor is modded though. Stock it ran about 27 with the same load. Between the lilies, grass, and mud where we hunt a typical water cooled outboard would make it halfway to our blinds!

That's pretty good speeds. Those gator-tails sure are nice.
