They could be liar gulls. Not every group of birds that is diving is diving on shrimp. The laughing seagull is the bird youre looking for, and there are usually a bunch of them when the bite is on under birds. If you cant see shrimp popping the surface, then its also probably not worth your time because there arent any fish below driving them to the surface. There may still be fish there but you might just have to fish slower to hook up with them.

Also keep an eye out for gulls who are just sitting on the surface and picking at the water, these spots can be productive too.


All in all I think the most important part of fishing birds is to make sure they are diving on shrimp or else youll just most likely catch gaftops and bull reds if youre lucky.
