It basically is a self triggered reel, you pull the string out to desired length and set the "trigger" in on of the grooves, when a fish bites the hook, the trigger slips out of the groove, causing the "yo-yo" to spin (reel the line up) with it spinning, it sets the hook for you.

I "googled" "fishing with yo-yo's" and up popped a pic of you and W at the weirs.
