Take an 8' piece of 6" PVC.
Cap one end.
Drill a few holes just above the cap in the pipe section.
Tie up to a tree with the open end up.
Put a few cracked pecans and/or peanuts in the pipe.
When the squirrel gets in and can't get out, put a cap
on the other end till you can get it in a cage.

i had one as a pet for almost 5 years ....we nursed him from a bottle and he pretty much ran loose in the house, would sleep in your pocket and was my alarm clock throughout highschool. by far, the COOLEST pet we've ever had and was very protective over my mom. you messed with her, he would eat your *** up!!! I've caught a hundred probably with only a sock and some tree climbing gear. The ONLY way to tame one is to get a baby that hasnt opened its eyes yet...if they've seen their mama, you can forget taming it from my experience. If you get one, remember to keep your toilet lid down all the time.....thats how mine met his end.

Never had a squirrel but nutria and possum. Nutria was very neat. Raised from a baby as well. Would hang around in the back yard and follow you around like a puppy.

Damned Ray, I like your trap better. Quick and easy. I'd like to know how high they could jump straight up so the tube could be cut back some, but I'd have to say it would be over 4 foot at least. I guess that's another reason to order a billy stixx rod... you can use the pvc tube as a flying squirrel trap.

Flying squirrel trap.
Items needed
1 x 4 approx 6 ft long
finishing nails
sheet rock screws
string
cloths pin
drill

Cut board into needed pieces. 1 at 16 inches 2 at 13 inches, 1 @ 12 inches
and 1 at 14 inches. 16 inch board goes upright with 14 inch as floor of trap. 16 inch goes on top at end of 14 inch making a 90 degree angle. 13 inch boards go on either side and screwed into side of 16 and from side of 13 inch into side of 14 inch floor.
The lid is made by taking the 12 inch board and placeing it between the two 13 inch boards. Drill a hole a little larger than the nails thickness you are using about 1 1/2 inch from the back of the 13 inch board on top so that the 13 inch board can be nailed thru to the 12 inch board causing it to swivel up and down. Cut a small piece to close the opening with it level with the side boards and secure it from the top of the 12 inch board. Now place a nail inside the 14 inch board about 5 inches from the back and nail in just deep enough that the nail is firmly in place. Now, drill a small hole about 1 inch above the floor from the back and thru 16 inch board. Another nail will need to be placed on top and about 1 inch from the front of the door or opened end of the door. Just enough to be firmly in place.
Tie a string to the door nail, run it over the 16 inch board and thru the drilled hole. With the door opened about 2 inches, measure
the string at the inside nail and tie the cloths pin to it. ( seperate the close pin from spring and use one half )
There is a groove where the pin spring was, This groove should slide over the nail and the tension of the door should hold the close pin to the nail while the door is open. You can use walnuts, or pecans(my favorite bait) or peanut butter on the cloths pin for bait. Place it on a limb or fork of a hollowed oak tree. When the squirrel goes into the trap, he will trip the trap and the lid will close him in.
Remember!!!!! they can and will bite the crap out of you till they tame down. Have your cage ready before you trap. I hope this is not too hard to understand.
Instead of this......I would just tie a pecan to the string and carfully lower the "trap door" until it was held open seveal inches. When a squirrel started eating on the pecan, the string would be released.....closing the door. I would put several small pieces of pecan, leading back to the "trip" bait. I would catch gray squirrels......but usually ended up turning them loose.

For catching gray squirrels.....a 1 x 4 board to make the sides is probably not high enough. I would use a 1 x 6 board.

Ray....I like your pipe trap. Very simple.

You are right, if you are trying to catch GRAY SQUIRRELS. Maybe even 1 x 8. I have used 6's and 8's in the past, and I have caught cat squirrels. Usually when I made these traps, I used what ever 1x's my dad had in the wood rack.

I think I will try Ray's method soon just to see how well it works. I just wonder how many Rat snakes Ray has caught using this trap.

I use to smear a piece of pecan on the front ledge to put the oil on it for scent.
