Location......take the engine cover off. While standing behind the engine, look up just above the top spark plug.

Unscrew each of the 4 screws part way until the "cover" is free from the engine. There is a spring pushing on the cover and it is best if the cover is loose from the engine before removing the screws.

After the cover is off......be carful when removing the thermostate, there is a gasket behind it.....try not to "tear" the gasket or you will need a new gasket.

After cleaning the thermostate.....I recommend [when your wife is not watching] putting the thermostate in a pot and add water until it is covered. Bring the water to a boil on the stove so the thermostate is "opened". There will probably be some "stuff" that will come free when it opens.

Now get a small screw driver, knife or similar tool and carfully clean out the engine where the thermostate goes.

Now you are ready to put it back in.

The picture is of a 40 hp Force outboard engine.

Thanks Gerald, I looked yesterday and thought that was the Thermostat but mine is located just to the left of the head. Don't worry about what wife she wants to go fishing/crabbing so anything is okay as long as boat runs.
