You can make Bank but be willing to travel. If I was still single I would do it. My best friend does NDT, I forget the name of his company but it is a branch of GE and they stricly test in plants such as cooling towers and tanks that hold chemicals. He travels non stop from Pennsylvania, Carolinas, Taiwan, Singapore to Illinois but he enjoys it. He has been with them for about 6 years and is up to about $56 an hour now. I think inthe next few years he wants to stay at the Lafayette office and settle down but the money is there if you are willing to travel. They also take alot of test to get different licenses. Some are over a week but with the passing of each test comes a pretty good pay increase. Good luck.

BigLake, I heard a rumor the other day that now, in order to get your API certs, you must first have your CWI. Is there any truth to this?

Also, Hopedale, I've got a jump drive with all sorts of API & AWS stuff on it. Let me know and I can try to get a copy of it to you.
No truth to that at all, there is a misunderstanding in exactly what an API inspector does. A CWI is a welding inspector, in process welds, construction...An API 510 is a Authorized Pressure Vessel Inspector and. Sure we look at and inspect welds but we look at in service welds, welds that have been in service. We look at corrosion rates on shell walls, heads and nozzles. We look at internal equipment. We look at heat exchangers, fired heaters, anything that holds pressure we inspect it. We make recommendations to the plant on how their equipment should be repaired based on our findings. We use corrosion rates to determine if the plant should repair their equipment this down time or if we think it can safely operate for another run cycle. Some folks that have an API cert have their CWI and some do not, it's all a matter on what that particular individual wants to do.

Hopedale Hustler, I have been the the inspection field for 18 years and started out just like you. I have 3 API Certs, CWI and Level II in NDE.
I have held many positions in this field. If you need any advise PM me and I will try to help you out. Remember, you are the only one that can limit yourself in this field. There is plenty of money to be made in the inspection business if you want to travel.
Chad, good advise you gave here also.

Offshore, most of the contractors take off a couple days before Christmas till after Jan. 1st, so the workers can be with family. Except for critical work like rigs and worker.
Not sure how it works on land.

We use one company called Can USA, the other is called BIS Salamis.
Not sure if they are hiring, but you might see if you can find out where they are located.
Most of the guys who come offshore are from the West Bank or Houma area.
