i had a complete reconstruction a few years back... at the time the doctors told me it was the most painful surgery know to man (he wasnt lying). they gave me an epidural before the surgery. i had to sleep in a chair for 6 weeks with my arm strapped around my stomach. I WOULD ADVISE AVOIDING SURGERY IF POSSIBLE...my shoulder still hurts to this day and after a good day of duck hunting it is extremely sore

Mine wasn't a complete reconstruction but they had to do a good bit of work on my rotator cuff, scrape a spur off of my bone and repair a tendon that was almost severed due to the spur. It was VERY painful. I had to do the whole 6 weeks with my arm in a sling then strapped around my stomach thing and that sucks big time. It was worse than when I had to wear a knee imobilizer brace 24/7 for 3 weeks and couldn't bend my leg at all. I still have problems with my shoulder and it's been 9 years since I've had the surgery. The #1 thing to remember is to do what the Dr tells you to do! I tried moving along too quickly when I got to the rehab process so that I could try to at least work out in the off-season for football and I think that's when I actually messed it up again. Take the PT very seriously and don't rush it. Because I tried rushing mine there's alot of things that I should easily be doing that sometimes give me fits.
