I use 12 lb. mono. Not many problems if you use a 20 lb. florocarbon leader and keep an eye on the mono.
When it looks like the it is starting to look different, scraped, scratched, change it out, or cut off 20 ft. or so.

Same here......except I don't use any leader.

I have caught many 25+ lb fish without breaking off. I once caught a 39" long Red on 10 lb mono......it took a long, long time to land it.

That's the fun part of fishing.
Light tackle fights are way too fun.
If they get off, fine.
If not, fine.
I have caught up to 40 lb. fish on 12 lb. mono.

This was while fishing at the Jetties with my daughter. Hooked that fish and pulled up the anchor to move away from other boats. It took a little over an hour and drifted over a mile. After 30 minutes I started putting more pressure on the fish. It was going to come in or I was going to snap the line. The 10 lb line held.
