I saw 2 guys had their boat up to the north bank in the south cut to West Cove on sunday. They were out of their boat walking the bank on the channel side fishing. They must of been fishing for some Sail Cats.

(this really did happen)

Default Sheephead

They usually love dead shrimp, the more rotten the better...
And the Old Jetties should be the place to catch them, if you can't get offshore. They love to eat barnacles.

Used to catch some big ones by the hundreds against the pilings on the Old Bridge in Grand isle esp. in the winter and spring. Eatin barnacles like crazy as you could see em swimming around the pilings. Better than shrimp is fiddler crabs if you can get em. Reds like em too. We got fiddlers behind our camp just to try and smoked em.

Seen the VC eatin sheepshead raw (sushimi) w/ some soy sauce on the side as they came over the rail of the bridge. The knife was waitin!!

Your right. When I fish the Jetties my motto is bait big enough that the hardheads and gaffstop can't get it. It is amazing what those 3 lb hardheads can eat.

If the bait is big enough the cats and gaffstop will pick it up, drag it a little and then drop it. Sometimes they leave it alone long enough for a bull red to pick it up.

If you don't have any luck in Big Lake I am willing to bring you on a guided gafftop trip to Cocodrie. It's a done deal under the birds this time of year, but there are some trash fish (trout) under them as well. Just have to weed out to get the good stuff.
