Default Beyond Scared Straight...

The show on A&E. Anybody else ever watch this show?

I honestly don't think my kids would survive me to go through a program like this if they acted like some of these kids!

With two coming up, what goes wrong to make em like this, aside from all the "my dad spanked me" crap that we hear today? Really wanna know some thoughts on this so, if I see it coming into my kids, I can head it off.

Spare the rod, you spoil the child!! We got away with alot of stuff when we were kids, but most of it was minor things. God forbid if the law got involved!! I wouldn't have been able to walk for a month!! I look back now and I thank my father and mother for making me walk the line. My dad says if you didnt hate me at least once when you were a kid I didnt do my job as a parent!!lol

Cory

A sound piece of advise, "You and your wife are the parents not the friend". So many parents today try and be the kids friend, because it is easier to be a friend than an actual parent. Kids from a toddler age need to be given boundaries and thought that there are consequences. This gives foundation for the children to respect the parents. Also, from the male side, a strong presence of a dad in the home is key.

A child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame!!!
Train up a child in the way he should go,and when he is old he will not depart from it!!

If they didnt need discipline and correction,God wouldnt have given them parents.

x2. My children will be reapectable, well mannered and obedient. Raise them in the church and disciple...which means whoopin when they deserve it. They will know how to treat adults. Thats whats wrong with this country, too many parents letting their children get away with so much. Disgusts me. I see children in super markets screaming and knocking stuff over, running around and being disruptful. If that was me with my mom, she'd spank me in the store...say I embarassed her in public because I represent her...then got it at home. Learned not to do that QUICK! I am only 21 but some parents need to step up big time!!

i couldnt agree more with 2ndamendment
you can be a parent or a friend not both

i dont believe there are many reasons to whip my kids for their behavior. because they are more terrified by the potential of a whipping not the actual act. besides once a child reaches a certain age stern parenting works better than a beating. i remember when i was a kid wishing my dad would just smack me and get it over with.

Ya smack em when they're young. Then they get to the point where they want to.challenge that smacking........you better be ready for a real fight! Cause they have the mentality to.lock some ***!! Beat endowment then and you've got a respectful kid(even tho he may be 17a at th time)

Gotta break that will when they are young. Like taming a wild horse, got to break his will. Got to be persistent, and consistant.Consistancy is a big part in training. Let em slide a few times, hafta just about start all over again. They will push you to see how much they can get by with at an early age. My dad always whipped us till we were glad. Glad he stopped.lol If the kids are still sassing you or throwing a fit after youve corrected them, you havent broken the will yet.Have to give the right amount of correction at the right time,to get the desired results.

i agree from time to time some form of corpral punishment is needed whether a smack to the back of the head or a belt to the backside they need to know u will do it but i dont think it should be the first reaction to a misbehaving child dont forget he or she is a child

#1 Rule: Do not threaten to do something w/o following through.
See so many parents that ,especially moms.(sorry ladies it's true) that threatin a spanking or some form of punishment and dont follow up . After a while the child knows that he / she can pretty much do what they want cause mom is all bark and no bite.
Look around at couples who are your friends w/ kids .You will find a couple or 2 like this. Dad can just look at the kids and they stop doing whatever it is that they were doing . But mom sits there and says over and over stop , dont, quit that ,hush etc, Because the child knows there's no consequinces to ignoring mom. And yes , there are some dads and sometimes both parents that are guilty of the same behavior. we have one son ,25 yo that only got 3 whippings in his life.
1 w/ a paddle at 14 for skipping school. 1 at 16 w/ my fist for balling up his fist at his mom. 1 at 18 again w/ my fist when he decided to try dad on for size.
Now i'm older and so is he. Hope i don't have to do it again but i will. But the main point is ,HE KNOWS I WILL

I have one that will be 2 next month and he is starting to push the boundaries a little. Had to correct him yesterday a little bit. He is in a biting phase and a phase of saying NO. Terrible Twos! Taking his lil butt fishing tomorrow for the first time

Somebody else already said it,a child needs BOTH parents, not only in their lives but to stand beside each other and be firm with discipline!I dont whip my kids for everything, some things they get time out,or sit in the corner,or writting lines(they hate that),but they know Ill whip them in a second if they need it!! I have very respectful, well behaved kids b/c of this. The most important thing is to not spank when you are angry and when you are done spanking you sit them down and explain and make sure they understand why they got it.and make sure they know you love them!!

I can say for sure that my mom was not affraid to let me have it. Usually when she was really mad though, she would just say "You just wait until your dad gets home!" Man, did that do the trick. I was scared for the rest of the day. I dont think there was a single time that he didnt follow thru. Moms, if you dont like to do the whipping, theres always a threat from dad. He doesnt have to be around to get the point accross. Just make sure there are no empty threats. Thats the worst thing you can do.
