Default garmin transducer problems

I've got a garmin 4210 unit in my bay boat and my depth reading have been inaccurate. I'm wondering where should I start to correct this problem. Could the transducer be bad oris there an update that I may be able to download to correct this problem? Thanks for any help ya'll can give.

Trying to update the firmware/software is always a good idea.

I would say unless the depth reading issue has been there since the installation of the unit/transducer, I dought updated firmware/software will fix it.

Check & clean your power & ground connections, all your plug connections. Is your transducer thru hull or mounted on outside? The transducer should make a clicking noise with unit on, you may have to put your hand on bottom to feel it.
