A 40 tohatsu is 45 cubic inches and shares a block with the 50 tohatsu, so the biggest carburetors that can be put on are from a 50. Put the 50 carbs, intake and exhaust and you have a 40 making 50 hp. Got to do port work to get higher. A 59 cubic inch 40 mercury shares a block with a 50 and 60 mercury. Bolt on 60 carbs and intake and you have a 60 hp motor without touching the internals and it makes more torque than a 45 cubic inch motor.

Both are fine motors, but the mercury has more potential.

Thanks Scott, I'm gonna end it here before it gets outta hand and becomes a pissing match here. Some people are hardcore merc people but from my research I think maybe a tohatsu can probably produce more then a merc. This I heard from people who are hardcore racers that race mercs who have even said it may come to a point they will switch to a tohatsu because they produce more to win races

Ok. I really don't think you can go wrong with either motor, just whatever you're looking for.

The merc is 59 cuibic inches and the tohatsu is 42.4. Only reason tohatsu dominated Formula 50 was the 45 cubic inch restriction, as in all professional boat racing. My Formula 50's best run was 82.7 mph, a stock 50hp tohatsu. The comparable motor to the 59 cubic inch merc would be the SST60, OMC motor, their kilo record was about 95 mph. 12.5 mph is lightyears difference between boats already tweaked to run.

so a man of your knowing, if you could have a brand new Merc 40 or Tohatsu 40 which would you choose to use for a platform to build from?
