Make sure they got purple underneath and a yellow ring on top. Those are the best.

They are called "hen of the woods".....Japaneese call them ****ake (spelling?)....They are awesome fried in strips....Just make sure you id them correctly or you will become worm food....Suppose to have all kinds of medicinal value...If you beleive that stuff....We usually get our fill in Missouri when we go there to hunt...The locals go crazy for them and often ask us to scout for them while in the woods...

I picked a few oyster mushrooms the other day. Its the only good kind in my area at the moment. They winter type will be done pretty soon, look for them on black willow. Chantrelles usually grow in dirt under oaks. They appear beginning in April in my area. Chicken of the woods is usually at the base of the trunk of water oak in my area. August/September is when I usually find them. Get a field guide because you will find a ton of mushrooms you will have no idea what they are. So in short, its worth your time if you know what for. I know they serve chantrelles in fine restaurants but I have never seen any for sale.

I am a chef and I have cooked and foraged every kind of mushroom. Chantrel is one of my favorites. Be careful there is a trumpet mushroom that looks like a chantrel that is poisoness. A chantrel is flat like a oyster mushroom and a trumpet is curled on the center. Best get a field guide to compare.

There are mushroom sights but as u see here u have to weed threw the non legal stuff. The shroomery is a good one an there are a few highly educated people on there that will answer any properly articulated inquires on ID with pics an so on Now if day ar chicken o da wood man u got some good stuff. Yes medicinal and taste good too. High protien an only source of protien derived from cellulose . Man I want some. If u pick more than eatable in one sitting then dry them an save um for Stew Rice Fish stuffing......good in flounder...lol Soup Fried Salad....noodle as long as cooked. Never eat them raw but like oysters raw. Oyster mushrooms too. Good way to supplement the food bill. |

One more note to remember, don't eat anything growing on water locust or honey locust. Some kind of toxin in locust sap doesn't get broken down and stays active in edible mushrooms.

An watch out for hoopels that think anyone that eats grows or picks wild mushrooms is a drug addict .
Just pissed here had a bother ref. To psychedelic mushrooms and that I do them. It's all part of the disinformation campaign started by da man to keep us people just trying to get more and better food for our selves and family. Not a buz Man what a backward group dem extorshionests are. Just wish people would respect the skills needed to grow hunt and identify a delicacy and not die in da process. |
