The way I read the rules, the trap can only be removed by the owner or the owner's agent...haven't seen anything about abandonment
Look at what the state says... http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/fishing...ional-crabbing http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/fishing...rcial-crabbing |

Would be best to call the ldwf office and speak with someone about it.
On a side note, those traps are a pain and ugly to look at. There should be an event where a bunch of volunteers run the banks and pick up stuff like that. Like they do at contraband bayou |

Not sure the rules but they have crab trap roundups in SE La. They give a notice to the crabbers and any traps not picked up past the date are getting picked up. In one sense the they are 'constant killers' in that the crabs get in there die and then the fish get in there to eat the dead crabs, die, then crabs eat the fish, etc. BUT, the ones that have been there awhile seem to have sediment and mud all around them and vegetation growing out of them. I almost think that you could use them for restoration work as long as you allowed for the crabs/fish to get out. Eventually they would rust out and all you are left with is a patch of vegetation = new land

To my knowledge there has never been a derelict crab trap removal project for Big Lake. Numerous projects for other parts of the state. Hmmm?
No metal crab traps for Calcasieu River north of the Intercostal Waterway, so they can use plastic box traps in Prien and Lake Charles, what's the deal? |

As I remember...... one was scheduled for the Big Lake area about 5 years ago but there was never any advertisement to let the public know about it. Then when the date came, there was some bad weather [I don't remember what] or something and it was postponed and never rescheduled.

Terrebonne and Lafourche both have removal programs. Commercial & recreational fisherman come together and round them up.

It gets old hearing folks low rent an organization that has done more for fish than anyone else out there. I don't agree with everything CCA does but they carry more water for fish and recreational fishermen than any organization. Remember Gill Nets?, who organized and used their own $$
to defeat the Netters? Guess those reefs built in Big Lake just appeared out of thin air. The new reef that will use recycled cement is going to magically appear the middle of May. Who lobbied the EPA,Corp of Eng,DEQ, La Dept W&F, in order to cut the price of building a reef by half so we can build more reefs using recycled material? Who is working with fortune 500 companies to get them onboard the reef/recycling band wagon? If you only knew how much time goes into what we do maybe it would become clearer. Have you ever fished the Trout Shootout? Next year why don't you Chair the event and find out the amount of work it takes. I will add your name to the list, what is your real name by the way? It's so easy to throw rocks from behind a screen name, please enlighten me. |

I agree Raymond, no organization is perfect but I support and appreciate what CCA does for the fishermen in Big Lake and I have not forgot about the small group of people that put their own money together to fight the Gill Nets......with that being said, "Thank You", for your time and efforts.....

Sorry Raymond, I didn't mean to take a poke at a hornet's nest. LDW&F is the lead on the derelict crap trap removal project. I'll bet if they can schedule one for Calcasieu that we could get some volunteers. It's my understanding that it's not CCA's responsibility, they just help LDW&F.
