allows you to program pre typed messages so if you are out of cell service and you get on the fish late you can email your family to let em know you r ok but gonna be in much later than expected so they dont panic, also has a SOS feature that will send message to coast guard to rescue you, has a foot print feature so your wife or buddies can check up on you to see where offshore you are . i bought it incase of electronic failure and vhf radio doesnt work i can use this if i need help
