Some of the BEST instructors in the state are: Alan from Geaux Shootin in Prairieville Pablo from Estrada Tactical in Breaux Bridge Barret from Bearco Training in Mandeville I wouldn't go to just any class, go to a class where you are going to learn something. I have been through classes about 5 times and not all classes are created equal. I only needed the class twice, the extras where freebies or "audits", usually I would demo some holsters or something. If you are in the Baton Rouge area, go with Alan, I love his outdoor range set up, he takes you out into Alligator Bayou where he owns some private land with a range set up and does the qualifier, if you tell him ahead of time and that you want to have some fun after the class, if possible he makes arrangements to have some fun after class. After class was over we shot USPSA qualifier style courses, brought out the AR15's and did a little "Plinking". Poor bowling pins. Pablo is a great choice for the Western part of the state. |

Thanks for the info kcinnik. I'll be taking the class with Pablo next week. A friend of mine suggested him. He said he's a great teacher. I just hope it's better than the last class I took in the Lafayette area. Hours of sitting in a class and 5 minutes on the range. I was very disappointed to say the least.

Class prices vary... in addition to the class price, there is a fee of $125 paid to the state for a first time registration.

Pablo is awesome, I have never taken a class from him, but I have done business with him. Too bad he is in love with Kydex, I can't get him over to the leather side. I use kydex for gun games, but when it comes to daily wear, leather is the way to go, especially when you can make whatever you want without a wait....

Not knocking Gordon, but I would recommend taking Alan's class in Prairieville over the BassPro class. It is a much better experience, he does more than teach what the state requires(after the class is over of course), he will make you a better shooter if you let him, and he has the equipment and experience to do it. Alan just has more freedom and space to do more things, even though the classroom time is at his house, but when you get to the outdoor range it is a lot different than being in a single lane at Bass Pro. All you have to do is tell him ahead of time you want to do some extra shooting after class and let him know what you have in mind. Oh, and you leave with your pictures, and usually a notary comes to class if he can get one, one does it for free, the other charges $10, either way it is worth it.

Country boy, absolutely. You can open carry in Louisiana, no problem with the po-po.

I have never been questioned about Open Carry. I wouldn't carry like John Wayne though...
I prefer a M&P Pro in a Pancake holster at 2 or 4 depending on what I am doing for open carry. Sometimes I break out a 1911 in a nice holster, depends on where I am going. |
