Default Pond Building

I own about 200 acres of land. All in aqua & agriculture, but because of layout and topo, 12 acres are unused and never will be used. I was considering building a fish pond (perch and/or bass), but have no experience with such a project. Is 12 acres to small to build a fish pond?

That is huge! I do know from experience, if you end up with muddy water, use aluminum sulfate to clear it. Mix in water and apart over the water. Works very well.

Do some research first. 12 acres is a good size pond. Mine is a little over a half acre and the kids and I enjoy it alot. Get with LSU Agcenter and let them help you plan it.

I work for the LSU AgCenter. This is a great guide to have if you have a recreational pond.

12 acres is more than big enough. Neighbor built a 8 acre pond. Made the middle a shallow island that has only 1 to 2 feet of water over it. Can also draw water down to let weeds grow on it. Dug it deep on one end around 16 to 18 ft deep and left the other end around 5 foot. Fish it by making laps like on a race track hitting both banks. Two bass caught out of there this year over 10 with one going close to 12 lbs. Pond was built and stocked 15 years ago. Pond also has a lot of smaller fish he asks everybody to keep the small ones to help keep it culled down.
He only stocked it once after they built so they are spawning its a great little pond.

also check out B.A.S.S website for information. I know that the head of BASS, Ray something or another built a private lake/pond and there may be some info on that. Also LDWF has a division to help you out.

12 acres will be one hell of a pond/lake.

I always wanted to build one and did a lot of research. You need some good, deep water so the fish can get in there when it is cold. Also some shallow water, say 3', for spawning areas - preferably with a sandy or pea gravel bottom. An island in the middle will give you some more fish attraction area. I would make mine longways if you can and narrow. Make it north to south and make sure you have trees on both ends to minimize wave action. pond will be clearer and allow you to fish out of the wind. I would also make my island run so that you can plant trees on it to further provide wind block. If you can make it with some jagged edges this will give you some points to fish like in a real lake.

Thats almost like the one we fish but the island is turned the other way almost the entire length of the pond. Plus the deep end is just the north end. Sides run from 3 to 8 foot deep.
