V Bay guys, how do y'all manage to fish the birds?
We tried the cove, hammock, and around the trash pile. Any advice or tips from some of you vb vets would be greatly appreciated |

Those popular spots, and close to them, always have people like that, and there is no getting around that in those spots. Thing about vbay is, it's so big that you can get away from the crowd and find good fishing, just got to travel. the minute I see boats piling up, I leave, and look for somewhere with no one there. I'm out for a therapy session more than fish though. I usually get some, and good fish, but hardly limit out on specks. Everything else though. Who the hell wants to fish in the middle of 30 boats?

So if every group of birds keeps getting jacked up my a$$holes, should we just try trolling around different reefs?

Look for bait popping....last week there was shrimp popping all over, trout were right under them. Fish tightline,no cork....unless you want to catch white trout and nasty gafftop catfish.

Last week i caught fish staying away from the boats watching the shrimp pop while everyone else was chasing birds and each other...just stay far enough away so they cant tell what your catching

X 10!!!! White trot seem to be after the small fish but just troll around the general area that you like to fish, away from crowds because I found out this yr beings I have a boat them specks stick a move we saw a set of birds went on em fished em with another boat birds stopped they left we stayed 25-30 yds away shrimp started flying, started trolling and casting picking up solid fish. One more thing we noticed if you fish marsh drains we catch more specs than reds sometimes. They are there to eat so don't pass up a drain that's funneling bait out of it at least stop 30yds away troll and mAke 3casts no bite move on. Did that yesterday and caught 50fish. Caught and released whites and specs no reds were legal. My boats being repaired call me or pm me Ill go show you some spots to get away from the boats and be alone and not burn a gallon of gas

Y'all gotta learn the "Breton island flip".
1st either smash the barb on your hooks or clip em off so unhooking is easy 2nd always fish with your rod tip down 3rd when you hook up don't make a scene regardless of how big the fish is 4 th learn to flip big fish in one subtle swoop 5th once fish is in boat just sit down Un hook it and slip it in ice chest I've had big fish on and a boat trolls by I push my clutch and let let the fish run to take the bow out a rod, sometimes you loose em sometimes tey stay on but at least they didn't see u hooked up !! |

Went out last evening, did well, found some birds working and yep here comes the calvary. After round two went looking for something away from the boats ended up with a few, but some quality. Was a beauty on V-Bay with the clouds.

yea everyone on here got good points here also just keep moving around keep looking for birds cux im sure there many many places where birds wud be diving in for baits and fish wud be there but if its in places where many boats wud be around u have very poor chance of having a good shot of catching fish without anyone running in with their motor. usually i wud be at places where there wudnt be many people around. like someone on here said v-bay is huge so there many places to to try around. hope its goes well for all of those who have to fight with others who doesnt wanna respect the rules of chasing the birds.

keep an eye out for slicks also.... Most of the VB crowd don't understand the fun that lies under a fresh slick....

Fishing the birds in VB at this time of year will get ya some fish. However, this is the easiest way to catch a few which also opens the door to fishermen that only fish twice a year in the bay. I try not to fish the birds; I prefer to fish on the bottom, no cork. Drifting the outer edges of Mud Point, Trash pile and especially the hammick will get you on fish with not many around you. Do not holler, scream or let fish break water causing the masses to observe you catching! Bigtuna has very good advice...slicks. So does Bgizzle fishing drains along the edges. Heck go out to Dry Reef and be by yourself...fish are there too. If you want to fish birds get a really good set of binoculars, run out to the middle of the bay away from everything. Stop big motor, turn on the tunes, relax then start glassing 360 around boat. You will come across birds working in very obscure areas with no one around...you have them all to you. Good luck!

1/4 to 3/8 oz jig head. My go to bait recently have been bassassin chicken on a chain and the sand eel jr in glow/char. Fish these bouncing along the bottom in slow retrieve. You get better action fishing the 1/4oz head in an even slower retrieve. If you run into birds i still like to fish under a cork 2 1/2 -3ft...same baits except go to a glow grub for a change.
