The launch is a really nice launch. Just have to use caution when using it since it is so close to the weirs where water is always moving. The launch is located inside Sabine Reserve which is closed to fishing right now so obey the rules and you should be good. No fishing when reserve is closed. The canal leads you into West Cove but there are normally 100 crab pods at the mouth of the canal so be careful. It is only couple feet deep near the mouth so on low tide North wind days you may hit bottom. You can start fishing once you get into West Cove. |

Roger that jchief!
The Southwest Louisiana National Wildlife Refuge Complex Fishing Regulation pamphlet put out by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for recreational opportunities at the Hog Island Gully Area states, "Non-motorized kayak, canoe, pirogue launching into Hog-Island Gully Canal east of water control structure for recreational paddling only" is permitted from October 16 to March 14. Boat launching at Hog Island Gully is permitted from March 15 - October 15. An online pamphlet may be found here: http://www.fws.gov/southeast/pubs/SWLAcomplex_Fish.pdf Permitted activities + open season/time for specific recreation areas (Hog Island) can be found on page 13. Hope this helps, Tom |
