I need a little fishing advice

Good day fishermen!

I'm from the Houston Texas area (please don't hold that against me) The company I work for sent me to Houma for the next year or so to help out on a job.

I love to fish both fresh and salt but I just prefer fresh water fishing slightly more.
I'm looking for places to fish near Houma or even beyond.

I have truck and 5th wheel camper and am looking for places within 3 to 4 hours drive from Houma where I can camp and fish.

Since I did not bring my kayak over here with me I'm looking for a place I can rent one or even a small jon boat on the weekends that I'm not working. (untill I return to Houston and get the rest of my fishing gear kayak included.)

I see several state parks that rent boats but I have no idea where to go.
With the waters warming up for the spring I'll be wanting to fish really bad.
I read about the Bayou Black area (close to Houma) but have to call around to see about a boat or kayak rental place but I still don't know the area. I'm sure it would be amusing to see me on the news as gator bait or on the search for lost fisherman report. :*****:

I'm 43 years old and looking for some friends with simular hobbies.
I'm not here to take all the fish I can just a dinner plate now and then.
If I catch a trophy bass I'll even donate it to your state lunker program. I'm just looking to kill time in a hobby I love.
If I get to make some friends along the way even better.
I brought a couple of rods with me and some freshwater tackle.
I can buy what I need if I don't have it.
So if anyone out there wants to show some cajun hospitality and teach this Texan to fish like a local I'd be very greatful.

Just an update, Sunday, I got bored and went to a canal I saw some people fishing Saturday and fished for a few hours off the bank.
I'm happy to report, it was a decent day fishing. I was hoping for crappie but only got 2 by days end.... However the catfish seemed to be hungry feeding before the front I guess. Caught 11 of those (the biggest was around a 10# blue) most were in the 2 to 3 # range. A few perch, one big red ear and one white bass.

So I had fried fish for dinner last night..

All in all my first Louisiana fishing expereince was a good one.
I just wish I had my Kayak.
I saw something tearing up the bank on the other side... just blowing up the weeds big time.
Whatever it was was activly feeding for hours and there were several of them them feeding.
I thought gar at first but I saw the tail of one I don't think it was a gar, I was too far away to know for sure... I'm thinking it was big bass feeding for the spawn.

But all in all it was a good day...

Good mixed bag of fish especially from the bank! Good eating. I'm not sure about the Houma area, but at Toledo bend the grass carp do that a lot this time of the year.

Grass carp in my experience are silver in color but I saw (from about 100ish yard away) and dark dorsil fin and thought it might be large catfish.
Another time I swear I saw a large green bass tail.
These fish seemed to be attacking bait in the hysinthis.
It was explosive!
It was fun to watch but I'll just have to wonder what it was as I don't know for sure.

Launching from Bayou Black you going to get some tired arms paddling you have to run a good ways to fish that area. If you want to bang the the banks there are plenty of places to fish off the side the road. Just remeber, when you're in a boat you want to bang the banks, but people on the bank try to cast in the middle of the canal. Pull your bait along the bank and keep moving unless your fishing catfish but it seems like you already know how to catch them. Good Luck and welcome to the area.
