Default Boats

Ok guys got a few questions What do you look for when buying a boat? What features do you wish you would have got but didn't? What features do you have that you could have done without? What features do you have that you can't live without? I will be fishing mostly saltwater inshore and some close rigs and fresh water when the sac-a-lait are spawning but mostly saltwater

what ever you buy get them to let you take a test ride. With a bay boat windy days are good days to test them out cause all boats ride great when its calm

an engine trim switch on the bow is real useful if you get in shallow areas
I've heard transom mounts are a gimmick and don't save the transom like you'd think when compared to the force while running.
Consider a tandem torsion axle aluminum trailer.
To me a loud sound system with xm/Sirius is really cool when cruising around. Not so much when fishing. I like boat riding almost as much as fishing though, so to me it's worth it.
On-board charger saves breaking out that charger and opening the hatch connecting the terminals.
All this gets way expensive though and I went through all of it thinking I had to or I wouldn't be satisfied. Now that I spent all that money, I now have a heavier boat and a much bigger learning curve than before with the electronics. Old fashioned experience and wisdom catches fish. Not features. It does make for a cool boat though for bragging rights and showing off. Depends on "how you roll" lol

My .02 on shopping for a boat.

1st know what you can afford. Don't go out there thinking it's all about features etc etc. it's important to ensure whatever you buy is within your budget. Many times I've seen people over extend themselves on a boat then end up having to work so much they can't use it!

2nd once you know what you can realistically afford go out and look at every single boat you can find in your price range both new and used. Don't be in a hurry and shop with your brain and not your heart.

That out of the way here is what I look for. I fish with my wife and kids so I need a '22 boat at a minimum. My next boat will prob be '24. I like a liner boat I think they look better and the storage is better. I prefer Yamaha motors because I've had good service from them. Some people say to put the Max HP on the boat possible i go for what will suit my needs. I have a 150 on my boat and it does everything I ask it to while siping fuel. It will run 53 when I need it to mostly I cruise at 35 I'm not in a race I'm out to have a nice day on the water. My next boat will have a bigger motor because it will be bigger boat. Build quality, this is a big purchase I want it to last. If you buy new you spec out the electronics etc the way you want. If you buy used you look at what's there had determine if it'll suit your needs on a boat by boat basis. You can always change that.

Just my opinions.

I fish Toledo and Big Lake mainly. My Frontier does very well in both.

Trim tabs are a great add on. I Pilot would be nice to stay over the brush tops, on board charger is a must.

Electronics can get expensive, but depending on the type of fishing you do, they can be worth it.

Good electronics.
I don't like radio in a boat, noise is not good for Trout.
Shallow water draft.
Hyd. jack plate.
Too much storage will just collect more junk. I know that cause I have done this.
I have a Talon. Don't get it. If you want one, get a Power Pole. But after getting one, I would get a manual stick type, not hyd. or elect. Talon and Power Pole are too much $$$ in my opinion.
At least 21 ft. long. Good sized casting decks.
Trolling motor.

Good sized and reliable GPS/depth finder

10 foot power pole, 2 if you can afford them

Max HP on motor, our 1910 nautic star has only a 115 and is rate for 150. When loaded with gear, gas, ice, fish, and men; you can barely get the thing to go... Hate it..

Over size trolling motor, if your getting a 22' boat, definitely get a 36 volt system. We have a 24 volt 82lb thrust on before mentioned boat and it doesn't do what it needs to do.

On board chargers are awesome

Trim tabs

Jack plates are nice but not needed

Jack plates and trim tabs are not needed, unless you fish in shallow water, like West Cove, in the fall thru spring.
