Default Just curious, would you

I drive over the I-10 bridge alot and I see all these people out there swimming and playing in the sand and I can't help but wonder if these people knew what's in the water And what containments are in the soil, would they still be swimming And partying in that beach. I for one will not be going there but I'm curious just who would go there.

No thank you. After what I have seen on the news I prefer to stay dry on land.

Seriously, I tried to find any differentiation between louisiana beaches, and didn't seem to find much of a difference. Mostly found testing for bacteria. Do you know of some other studies?

we have ALOT of residential areas with septic tanks for each house and most of these dont work right so it dumps raw sewage into ditch which goes to river...
we have ALOT of runoff from farms, chemical plants and then our filthy streets that end up in river... this is just a few things, not saying that OUR AREA is to blame completely for this because we get other crap from all around us and north of us by rivers

There isn't a body of water in Louisiana that doesn't have some type of pollution, but yes some are much worse than others. I probably wouldn't swim in Lake Charles everyday for that matter. I had this in the back of my mind when at the beach at Grand Isle last week, the kid was having a ball. The storms were picking up and there were tarballs washing up all over. I am cool with that, but that dang Corexit still bothers me.
Did read somewhere that every single water body in the US is polluted in some form or another also, mainly due to air pollution. In other words, you can not go hiking in a remote location and just drink the water, its ultimately unsafe in the long run unless you can get it right out the spring. There are a couple of springs in the Vernon Unit of Kisatchie on hillside seepage bogs that people have stuck pvc into the ground and the water comes out the pipe and its very good and cold, and its as safe as can be found.

We have a camp in Tensas and uncle swears the catfish out of the Tensas River are the best catfish in Louisiana They have a yellow tint to the meat and that place is slap full of farm chemicals and PCBs. I still eat em occasionally, but not if I was pregnant, but if I become pregnant then there are much bigger fish to fry

Most of those are pretty outdated though. I think the last time some of them were tested, or at least updated, was around 2008.

Ah, I wouldn't hazzard a guess. I imagine some of them might be better, but I doubt it. Probably not any worse though. Most of those are warnings against mercury, PCBs, things of that nature. Doubt those are any better, probably at the same levels.

Fish advisories (but from '98)

Calcasieu Estuary

Swimming advisories for 2011 (the most up to date)

http://new.dhh.louisiana.gov/assets/...eachReport.pdf

I am not going to summarize this report, lets just say there are LOTS of fecal coliform in Louisiana waters! Some scary stuff in there, Lake Charles beach probably isn't as clean as Pensacola for the record.

Deq has a list of all waterways tested. All seem to have fecal bacteria. But beyond that, Bayou d'inde seems to be the worst in our area. Lake Charles isn't great, but it doesn't seem any worse than the other large bodies of water. I'd like to see how it compares to other bodies of water outside of louisiana. I wonder if eating fish out of these waters is any worse than swimming in it.
