Default Odd question......Anyone broken their back before?

Got a call earlier that my Mom fell off her horse and broke her T3 vertebrae. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance then transfered to another hospital for surgery. Waiting on the call from the Neurosurgeon doing the procedure. My Mom is not going to tell me the whole story. What should I expect?

My first instict was to get in the car and go to North Carolina, but Baby is supposed to pop any second......

I think I should ship her here. Theres no way she will be able to take care of herself, right?

I broke L5-S1. Takes a while to heal but you learn to do things differently and adjust your life. Does she have someone to help her recover?

Tim. Feel free to contact me, I'm sure my wife can give some advice on the recovery and physical therapy she will need.

I got more info.....the disk was highly unstable the way it was. They haven't done the surgery yet for some reason. If it were that emergent you'd think they'd gotten it done already.

She can't move at all right now. Both too painful and well, she said she just can't. Dont know exactly what that means. She has some friends up there but nothing like what is required to handle a recovery like this.

The more I read the more worried I'm getting. This is a very serious deal. I've got a lose lose here.

If baby hasn't come on her own by Tuesday, we have a section planned. Mom will be recovering still from what I can tell. But can't break away from Baby and Wife to go get her! Plus, don't have time to take care of her with work and baby and Wife fresh out of the hospital.....this sucks.

Time will tell.

Hank, Nancy,

How long before she will even be able to sit up on her own? I don't know what I'm gonna do. She has a house note to pay up there, dogs, horses, etc.....

Its gonna be real tight with My Wife out of work with new baby already!

How do I go to work everyday AND care for all 3 of them AND cover all these bills?

My mind is racing...........

If she lives alone she might qualify for for an inpatient rehab to help her get back on her feet. Worth looking into for sure.

She won't be able to lift anything for a while. Especially anything with the horses. She could look into a sitter to stay with her if she needs that for a few days, and someone to help with the horses. In the hospital, they get you up and walking in a couple of days. She will be encouraged to walk a lot. Physical therapy will also be in the picture. Driving will be out for a while. A lot depends on the severity of the fracture and location. Have faith, Tim. It will work out.

Alot of variables go into play here. Normal case: they go in and do a fusion with rods. She will get out and they will fit her for a TLSO brace to wear whenever she is sitting up for several months. She will have to be log rolled for a while to prevent any torqueing. Recovery will be quite a while. Now depends on the type and severity of the break as to the degree of problems. If its pressing on the spinal chord or causing cord edema then you start looking at paralysis and things like that. Really depends on the specifics. Hope this helps a little if you have specific info and questions feel free to pm me. We deal with Neuro problems daily in our unit

I fractured L2 and L3 while pitching in college. Never sat out a game, but I pitched through some of the worst pain you can imagine that year and my consistency suffered. The Astros' doctor told me it likely would never heal, so quit or get used to it. I got used to it, worked out my back a lot, and never had a major issue with it again after that year, though I do get some pretty serious lower back stiffness the day after doing anything lower back intensive.

It really depends more on what else is injured in addition to the fracture to know what the future might look like. Disk or nerve damage in conjunction with the fracture could have a significantly worse prognosis.
