Default Need coyote killin' help

Anyone here on Salty Cajun have a coyote call they want to put to good use ?? I have 3 cows that have been attached by coyotes in the past 2 months. One cow has no tail, other has no ears and half a nose and the other one is deceased because the pack decapitated her. Im tired of losing cows and I called a guy that sets traps for them and he charges $50/coyote. Its not a bad price, but I think it would be more fun to get a call and "choot 'em"

I can assure you it is much harder then calling and shooting them. I hunt coyotes occasionally on my deer lease during the off season and it doesn't take long before they get wise to a call..... $50 a coyote vs losing a cow seems like a cheap price to me.

I think you will get several offers to help reduce your coyote problem. I have cattle also, and the old saying about a mule really works. Put a mule in the pasture with your cattle and coyotes will stay away. It really works. The mule eats the same feed as your cattle whether it be grain and/or hay and/or pasture grass. So there is no additional upkeep/ expense. Stock yards sale this aminals for 100-200 dollars!

I thought it was donkeys they used. I can see how a mule would work also being its half donkey.

Just got a "spinner call" from cabelas.com

http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/produ...ayTab=Customer Reviews

$30. Going to give this a try. Donkey is next. We had a donkey, but a pack of 10+ coyotes killed it. Ran it to death.

For future reference, if it's sheep or goats you want guarded, get a female or gelding. Male donkeys will attack the sheep or goats.

But, yeah, coyotes will steer far from any donkey (or mule, I'm pretty sure) in a field or yard.

I worked with a guy who trapped coyotes all over the country. He said coyotes are just like feral hogs, they have no natural predators and breed frequently. They're actually worse than hogs because they're strictly carnivores. He said to minimize a coyote population, you have to kill or trap 75% of the population for 7 years and if you miss your mark even one year, you go back to square one.

We've had donkeys in our pastures in north la and haven't had any coyote probs. I've also heard that when you shoot one, hang em on a fence post and it keeps others away.

Wow, i had no idea coyotes could take down cows. Always thought they were mostly small game predators.

Try to get your hands on some memory foam mattress. Cut it into 1 1/2" cubes, soak it in bacon grease or old cooking oil, if you have some pig bloos you can put that too, put it in a big pan in the middle of the pasture at night. The coyotes will come eat it, get a stomach blaockage and die. Pick it up in the morning so the birds of prey don't get a hold of it.

Get a jack.......... Had problems with coy dogs getting my cousins barbados that we were taking care of while he was working out of state. We lost 5 in one month, then put a jack in there and hadn't lost one since. He even went after my brothers collie when he got in the field. Funny as Hell to watch.

Always keep a rifle handy.

When I raised sheep and cattle in Ohio, I always had a rifle behind the seat of the truck and riding around with me on the tractor. More than half of the total coyote kill on the farm property were targets of opportunity, and missed opportunities are costly.

Calling, trapping, and snaring can be tricky. They all have their place in an overall management plan, but they take a lot of skill and effectiveness to implement, depending on the season, lay of the land, and available food sources.

Don't bother giving hunting permission to guys who want to preserve coyotes for future hunting or wait for winter until the pelts are in better shape. You need as many coyotes dead ASAP. $50 each is fair. Better to pay for quick results than fart aroud with yahoos who don't really know what they are doing.

If you want to experiment with using recreational hunters and trappers, do it at a time when your animals are not in imminent danger.

But if you start keeping a rifle handy and you spend a lot of time on the property, I bet you'll make a significant contribution to the kill numbers. The coyotes have probably become somewhat accustomed to you and your smell, so they will be slower to bolt when they see, hear, or smell you. Make every shot count.

I'm from DeRidder Jordan. I'm not an expert dog trapper or caller and I'm down in LC now, or I'd offer to set some steel for you for free. Guy up there I know of who is an expert Coyote trapper, Mr Steve Hardy I believe. If you can look him up and he's willing, he's probably going to be one of the best available. You can probably go through the Louisiana Trapper and Alligator Hunters Association to get some help and in contact with him. He's a board member I think. I want to say he's from around Dry Creek area?
