Default Help guys ? a place to retire ? help

Im in Little Rock and I am really looking for a nice (low to no ) crime rate place, haha, and looking for a place to retire in. im 56 , gonna buy a bay boat and I aint skered to go out a few miles ............? I have hired guides from Venice to Grand isle etc ....but ....if YOU were to pick a place ... where would it be ? this is a real deal question , just looking for some insight from real fishermen, I love bay fishing for specks and reds ....but would like gulf access.(by boat) if you were to relocate , where would it be ? thanks in advance .tj

Homua area, the wife is close to civilazation and fishing at your back door. My parents spend a lot of time in that area, dad consults in the oil field and mom shops.

Question.....

Do you want your property to have water access or do you mind trailering a boat?

Lake Charles area has a lot to offer with great saltwater and freshwater fishing with very easy access plus things should be taking off around here with a lot of growth and development for the needs that a city supplies but still has a lot of outer areas to live.

I'm in Empire. It's all good. Any where you see mentioned here you have to look at surroundings and insurance issues. I have limited, specific insurance and am basically self insured thanks to the Govt. and ins. co.'s. The privilege of living in paradise.

Gotta be careful where you move with flood insurance going through the roof.

I guess it depends on your financial status after retiring. If I am at the point that I can afford to replace a house if needed, I would like to be close to New Orleans. Shoping for the wife and tons of stuff to do in the city. I was looking on realtor.com at some houses on Chef Menteur Highway (Hwy 90) SE of the city.

I would say one of those houses on Prien...but I don't want to live in Texas

Maybe look at LaTour in Matthews, LA - golf community just south of Raceland on 308. Or if you want more land buy a tract on 308 and build your house, boat & tractor shed, etc.
1 hour from Grand Isle, 30 mins to Houma, 40 Mins to NoLa. Depends what you want. Thibodeaux is another option to consider.
I live in Houston and have a Grand Isle camp on the water in Queen Bess Bay. When I make the 6 hour drive from Houston to GI, I normally stay for 10 days to 2 weeks...

Good luck with that!! That is a good area though. I can be in Downtown NOLA in an hour. Kenner/Metarie 40 minutes. Houma 20, Thibodaux 15

Great Freshwater fishing, Lake Cataouchie 35 minutes, Lake Des Allemands 15 minutes, Lake Bouef 10, lake Long 15 minutes, Saltwater you have Grand Isle 1 1/2 hours, Dularge 45 minutes. It's a nice central. They also have some good DRs in the area that are part of the largest hospital system in South LA so you have good care with that too.

Honestly if you don't need/want a lot of land Lockport/Raceland/Matthews is good area. Still has a small town feel but we have everything we need here. Wal-mart, local grocery stores, a farmers market every Saturday. Local meat markets, a really good ag store.

The main thing, not to close to gulf for hurricane & flooding reasons. Unless you got $$$$ to do repairs afterward. Lake Charles has 2 lakes connected with river connected to BIg Lake & Gulf. Good launches or easily trailer 15-20 minutes to good launch on Intracoastal connected to Big Lake. Below Lake Charles, Houma, New Orleans WILL flood with a hurricane.

I have a bay house in Port Lavaca for sale. Prices and taxes are better here than Rockport. IF anyone is interested give me a shout. The house sits on a bluff 25 feet above the water and the property slopes down to the water. There is a 180 ft pier with a 6000 lb boat lift. I even have a 2012 Majek Extreme that I can sell. Let me know if there is any interest. I got tons of pictures.
