There's already a competition to test retriever's skill sets, it's called Field Trials. They're sanctioned by the American Kennel Club and you get fancy blue ribbons when you win one. If you wanna test your dog against a standard to see if it can hang, they have Hunt Tests. You either pass or fail by meeting a certain criteria. They give fancy orange ribbons if you pass. Go sign your dog up if you think he's got what it takes to be a "Ribbon Dog".

True, and that is an admirable trait at times but the reason they drop you for a "switch" is because you (or they) don't want a dog to drop that double-banded crippled greenhead "switching" to pick up that spoonbill. Just a hunting scenario they try to create to test control.

I don't think hunt tests allow rock dogs because of the lack of the handling skills during the tests. They'd never finish. I doubt your dog would bust because of picking up more than one bird.

Not a switch if he doesn't drop the first bird.

Ok, they don't want the dog to drop the neck-banded greater canadian. Maybe he can pick up multiples of those I don't know.

Snap a pic of that. A limit of teal in a dogs mouth would be funny to see.

If a dog doesn't have the instinct to go for a cripple over dead birds then retire him.
That's not training, that's basic instict. |
