That is the accepted common name. Scientific name is Asimina triloba. Its a member of the custard-apple family. Supposedly very similar to banana in flavor. I've not seen one, but I don't doubt it's possible. They do occur in Louisiana, although more in the northern part of the state. They do, however, occur pretty far south in East Texas according to the NWF tree guide I have.
Where did you find this one this far south? |

They have them growing at the Louisiana State Arboretum at Chicot State Park. They should have fruit on them about this time of year but I think they ripen a little later.

Always thought they wouldn't grow this far south but LSU agg said they had a variety they were thinking to try to get intrest and possably an agg business started. Since I aint ever seen one in the flesh we ordered 2 trees 4 years ago. They came about 2 ft tall. They are now like 8 ft tall and full of dark purple flowers. I'll keep yall posted. So far we have only gotten 2 small fruits the birds tore em up. But they very tasty and different.

While it was raining I went back in our blog and found when we planted the small mail ordered plants.
http://cappyandpegody.blogspot.com/2...#gpluscomments I guess time has a way of sliding by 'cause I was shocked ![]() When it quit raining I got Peg to run out with me and take a picture of me standing by one of 'em so ya can kinda get a feel for how big they are now. IMG_2780.jpg Here's a close up of the flowers and emerging leaves. IMG_2783.jpg Next week after we do our weekly yard duties I'll try to remember to put them in or garden report. The great thing about our blog is having it to look up past adventures and remind us the details that age takes away. |
