Years ago, my daughter and I went to special on whooping cranes at the zoo in New Orleans. The biologist speaking suggested that juvenile pairs will have eggs, but will not fertilize them until age of five years old. But did offer the fact that it is great news for juveniles to actually nest eggs, because the pair will continue doing it for years to come.

I really forgot why this happens.
