Outboard 89 or 93
I was watching some videos and I See that the new yamaha in line 4 stroke 200 recommends 89 octane gas, along with a few other Yamha engines. Could running a higher octane in an outboard engine hurt it? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk Last edited by alphaman; 05-23-2014 at 05:12 AM. |

in the past if you ran premium gas it would make the engines run a little hotter and in the long run it could shorten an engines life span and that's why it wasn't recommended back then but with todays engines they are made better and have much better cooling systems so I don't think it matters anymore.
I was just looking at the new tohatsu engines and for the whole line they say it runs on 87 octane but will perform much better and it is recommended that you use 89 octane gas for them. if I buy a new motor I will use the 89 octane premium gas they suggest is best for the motors. bottom line is you should only use what your year motor recommends and don't worry about what the newer models use |

The higher the octane the less prone it is to "burn". Higher octane fuel is used in higher compression engines to prevent detonation.

outboard 89 or 93
I just sold my 1984 Yamaha 150 outboard and the guy called last night about what kind of oil and gas did i run all these years. The mechanic was amazed at the compression on the old motor. All i ran was regular and that's what was recommended when i bought the motor. First one in the area and only ran yamalube through the motor. Carbs been cleaned 4 or 5 times. Still kickin!

Premium for high performance, high compression motors. Will running premium make ur motor faster? No. There's no need to burn anything else but ol reg gas unless ur motor is hot.
