Default Trailer hub question

It's been a little over a year that I've had my boat and trailer.
How often should I check and grease the hubs on my trailer bc I've never check them since I got my boat in of May 2013

Depends on what type of hub you have. If it's the oil bath hubs very seldom check them. If you have the traditional style greased hubs I would check it often. Use buddy bearings if you don't already. After a somewhat long trip it's a good idea to touch the hubs to make sure they are not getting hot.

I agree with Montauk17, grease them often and I feel the hubs every time we stop for gas. If they need grease or are going bad, you will know it when you feel it. I make one 10 hour drive to BL each year. I had a berring go completely out 2 hours into a trip on a Saturday, was fortunate to break down by a car service dealer open on Saturday. I now carry a box of 4 hubs with me and grease.

Be careful not to overfill using buddy bearings, it can push the seal off the back.

What's the spring for in there. Is that something to look at? The further back is inside determines the amount of grease behind the hub.

When you pump in grease, watch the spring. The spring will compress as you pump in grease. If you put in too much grease, it puts more pressure on the seal which is on the back side of the wheel and could cause the seal to start leaking.

I put in a little grease every 4 or 5 trips [250+ miles].
