Default Drive shaft on 2007 2 wheel tundra.

Guys

I had 2 bad u joints on my tundra. Had u joints changed. Now i seem to have a vibration when i drive.. Mechanic made marks to line up the 2 shafts the same way.

Then he indicated this model did need to do it. its the same either way.

Anybody know if that's correct?

I went back and he checked the u joints. Asked him about the lining up the drive shaft the same way. He said it was my tires, or my drive shaft out of balance. He told me I'd be without my truck for 2 days. He said it would take that long to see if my driveshaft was out of balance.

I went had my tires balanced again.. I have factory rims ..

They need the glue on weights.

My truck seems to throws weight alot..

Anybody know of a shop that checks the balance of your drive shaft in the Lafayette area. I want to bring it there myself.

Or does it really matter about lining up the yokes and 2 shafts the same way on a toyo tundra?

Thks

Gunner

As a Machinist I have built several drive shafts and worked on equipment that has a drive shaft.

I always put a couple of punch marks on each housing to make sure it went back together the same just to eliminate any issues in case there was a problem after it went back together.

But the bottom line is a drive shaft is balanced before it is installed so it should not matter.

Unless he had to cut a yoke off and weld it back on. Then it needs to be re-balanced.

Do you have a swing bearing (that's what I call them or hangar bearing) on your shaft ?

If so and it's going bad it will cause a hell of a vibration.

Just my .02.... I'm sure there will be some professionals comment also.

Ok.... Understood. I've seen so many different types.

He didn't put the shaft back in the same position. Guaranteed one end is rolled 180 degrees. That's the only thing it could be unless you have a faulty U-joint or bad hangar bearing which I would doubt.

well he may have used the wrong sized u-joints or not centered or seated them correctly or it could be damage caused by the old u-joints, if they were bad enough to bang around then they could have caused the drive shaft to get out of whack.

how long have you had this truck and was anything wrong with it before the u-joint replacement? if it was trouble free go to a different shop and have them replace the u-joints again, maybe something was wrong with the u-joints they used or maybe they mounted the yokes on the wrong side.

if he marked it he should have replaced it in the same position regardless if he needed to or not.

as others have said, crawl under the truck and see if the marks are on opposite sides, if so then I bet that is your whole problem and they may be trying to make more money off of you while fixing their mistake.

When putting it together they dropped/got a needle baring in the cap, will cause the same issue if your carrier baring is still good.

Happens on tractor equipment all the time when we in a hurry.

make sure he uses the oem toyota u joints. May cost more but less of headache. I had to go through 2 sets of autozone u joints which lasted 6 months each before I took it to my mechanic and he installed toyota parts and its been good for 2 years now.

I brought my truck to USA driveline. Had to bring it to a shop a couple of doors down. They aligned the shafts back to the marks my mechanic made. Cost me #250.

Drive's great now.. Called mechanic.. He won't give me my money back. I won't be recommending him anymore.

Need a good mechanic now.. Any recommendations?

please post the business and mechanics name to tell the rest of us who this rip off mechanic is that cant be trusted and the business that wont stand behind his work?

so we don't have any fellow members get screwed over by this guy like you were

by the way it probably not worth your time unless you need to teach him a lesson but you can do small claims court and get a judgement against him for a refund. he might not pay it but at least you can embaress him that way
