I change my line frequently due to the line drying out and becoming brittle from the saltwater (I never have this problem in freshwater). I have had numerours trips when I would go to tie a knot and it would continue to break (bad feeling when it is on you favorite setup). Big Game on the big spool is cheep and I do not want my line to be the reason I lose a trophy. I do not use a leader but I do use a quick clip as I change baits fequently unitl I find the right entree to offer.

I wouldn't use it, either, if I backlashed as much as you. ![]() |

Recently I have been using 20lb powerpro. Before that I always used 30lb, but Pox gave me some 20lb and I like the extra casting distance and sensitivity. Sometimes I use a 20lb flouro leader.
I don't have major problems picking backlashes out with braid. In the past i had some nasty ones that needed to be cut out, but this was when I was first learning to use a baitcaster. These new shimano reels have such a good breaking system that my backlashes are much less severe. |

nothing like slingin a 1/2 oz jh into a post a ptrain w/o any brakes on in the reel and the sun is in your eyes then BOOM awh @%$#!!! no i agree the 20 is better than the 30 lb and the shimano reels rarely give me trouble with backlashes |

I use the leader b/c the braid is so "floppy" it gets caught in the hooks..........the floro is pretty tough, it won't bend as much, hence no line in the hooks. Plus some folks believe the fish can't see the Floro, so every little bit helps...........Tim

Ive used 14 lb. pline and silver thread an-40. To me the line is just getting good after the second time out. I dont have the time to be changing lines every couple of trips. If the line only lasts that long, its time to find a better line. I dont have a problem with it dry rotting. I spray my reels and string down, with a silicone lubricant after every trip-seems to keep my string nice and supple.
