I asked a giude we used in Venice about this and learned that a lot of banana boats used to sink or be stranded in the Caribian so now captains in GOM consider them badluck.
The real reason so many of them sunk is because they were poorly constructed and maintained. I don't remember if it was captain hoop or captain Eddie that said this.
