Rollover Reds (?)
Lots of water moving out of the weirs, lots of bait in the water, but almost no reds. However, I did see some people catching them on the back side of the weirs (Rockefeller marsh side). I assume the reds were in there watching the bait roll by before they went through the weir, just as I thought they would be doing on the bayou-side of the weir, which wasn't the case. Is it legal to get out on/next to weirs? I guess the fish would be congregated in the slack water to attack bait as it went by, just as they could be (but weren't) on the other side). I'll give it another shot (Rollover Bayou and weirs) this weekend and report. |

we used to fish there before Katrina, it is legal to fish all around the weirs. We used to get on top to cast net for shrimp, and so did everyone else. I don't remember any game wardens, but at the time it was definitely legal.
One hint if you're fishing rollover bayou, we used to catch our limit of reds and flounder right there by the launch without even cranking the motor. Of course water has to be right. |

If it's calm try and get out to flat lake. I've seen schools of red fish in there that blew my mind. You can also beach your boat and fish the beach where at the mouth. There is a weir on the north side of the lake as well. Used to go in a 14' flat all the time.

It's legal to get on the weirs. Ditto on what everyone else said. There's a lot more real estate to fish out of Joseph's harbor also.

Uh, never mind. My old brain kicked in and I remembered. Sorry. We used to call the inshore area around there "no man's land". Very shallow everywhere and easy to run aground. A 14 flat bottom is just he ticket up there. I thought that old wier was washed out? Anybody know?

I've been in flat lake last year on two occasions in a 24ft Bluewave PB/250 yama4. We went up the bayou into the opening at Rollover lake. It was about mid tide as I recall and falling. It is shallow (2-3FT...or LESS) but if you are cautious you will be fine. I don't recall the skeg hitting anything other than mud but I kept my distance from the banks and made a wide entry into the bayou west of the opening as there is a bar running out to the west on the S. side of the entrance.
