I always understood this was a respect thing and not a superstition thing. If a man chooses to give you his knife opened, then that's how he likes to change hands with his knife and since you are borrowing it you gotta give it back the way he prefers. If it's closed, give it back the same way

I got one buddy in particular that I'll ask for his advice and then after I get it I do the opposite which usually turns out better for me..
