I can't imagine this working too good with an ipilot in heavy seas, not from the stern. I wouldn't want my stern to be facing into the seas at least. Btw we have a 60" shaft on our 22' boat and it rarely comes out the water. The only time it will is when the seas are so bad that its uncomfortable to stand up anywhere in front of the console.
