Outdoor Patio Ceiling

I just completed an add on to my house to make a covered patio area. I am to the point where i need to close in the ceiling. I was curious what people were using for outdoor kitchens or patios that is easy maintenance and easy on the pocket book. Any suggestions are aplreciated.

Tongue and groove pine. Beadboard. Depends on how nice you want to do it.

I'll third that motion. I really like the look of the v-groove and just a nice sealer on top to keep that natural look. Check out Waterlox Sealer.

Beaded board looks great, paint well and you won't have the issue with sap leaching out of knots through the paint.

This gives you a good example at calculating how much wood you'll need. With 10% waste added, you're looking at about 1,200 linear feet of 1"x6". 17'x28' shouldn't be too hard on the pocketbook. If you go the tongue and groove route, give them a call. You'd be suprise at how little the price difference between pine and cypress is. But once cry once!!

This is a pic of mine. I would stain and seal everything before you put it up. We used tongue and grove pine

Use pine. Carpenter bees love cypress.

You can stain before installation. It's easier that way.

Sealant can be rolled on. You're going to have to reapply the sealant periodically anyway. Rolling it is not a problem.

Definitely stain before. I had a friend install it first, then stain it. After the boards shrank a little, it left the unfinished wood showing in the tongue and groove. He had to get up there with a small paint brush and apply stain in the cracks.

From what I have researched it looks to me like bead board falls in to category within tongue and groove. As in you can get tongue and groove boards in bead, v groove, center match, etc...I could be wrong.

Regardless I got to pricing some 1x6 T&G board and it is not as economical as I had hoped. I have a difficult decision on my hands.

What about using fence boards? It won't look as refined as T&G, but you can usually pick them up fairly cheap. And you'd have to cut the first inch or so off of the top to square off the dog ears. It could have a cool rustic look.

Beadboard can be bought in 4X8 sheets. Some people use that for exterior ceiling projects.

In my opinion, it doesn't look as good as T&G, but some people make it work for their application.
