The Burns 4/24/2017
Miami Corp could stand to give the main canals a bit of attention in regards to floating weed growth in the main canals (mainly the long North-South entrance canal from the ICW). It may not be navigable by summer. What used to be a wide canal is now a much-narrower trail through stuff that can spin your prop (but that was last week...) Flukes and frogs were the ticket. The canal waters are muddy and resemble the water of the Intracoastal. Traveled east out into the marsh where the water is still clear. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I got halfway there and realized I left my !@#*+% marsh anchor in the flipping garage.

Sweet, do you have a size limit you try and throwback?
Also on the canal upkeep, I'm not sure Miami really cares about it. I mean how much revenue are they making off fishing permits anyways? Which brings another question, how many permits do they sell? I've seen the permit numbers go into the 700s, but does that mean they really sell 700 something permits? That's a lot of boats Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The way I see it, the Burns is full of dinks, so that's what I keep. If I caught a 2.5-3 lb'er, I'd throw it back. I figure I'm doing the place a favor by removing dinks.
I agree. The Miami Corp doing any major maintenance is wishful thinking. But maybe they'll read these kinds of posts or something and maybe it'll matter to someone, somewhere. Maybe not. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Nice trip. We do the same. Normally anything over 2 lbs is released and I will keep smaller bass. I think they eat better too. I haven't run down the ICW to go in yet, but the water is lower and the weeds thicker this year than previous ones in the front. Also seems like a bunch more people out there this year. I haven't been yet without at least 8-10 trailers at the launch, and this is during the week. Last year you would expect to see a 3-4. One trip had 22 trailers parked under the bridge and probably twice that many at the north launch.

Three inches of rain wouldn't hurt the back, either. Do you fish the front exclusively? I ran the trail that connects the front to the back last week. From last year, it looks like the Corp cleaned it out because it was chock full of hyacinth last year and is now clean as a whistle. Can you still get in the big front canal (I think they call it the Mobile canal)? I used to fish the front all the time in the late '90's but it seems totally different when I fished it once last year. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

We normally fish in the front. I had to pushpole out of a couple of overgrown cuts last year that used to be open and haven't tried to run further back this year. I may now that I know that back cut is open. I also haven't tried to get to that canal. I fished it some a couple years back and it got harder to get to it as the year progressed. We did good last year in the front, but i will probably try some new areas to get away from the people. Can't beat launching and fishing within 5 minutes though.

Caught one last trip that was probably 4 - 4.5 lbs. Didn't have a scale with me and let it go.

That's a great Burns fish. I've heard of a guy pulling some 9 lb'ers out of there this year, fishing patches of whips.
I caught a 4 lb'er in the late 90's in the 45 canal, but that's as big as I've caught out there myself. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Me and a friend fished at the end of the 45 two weeks ago and he pulled out a 6.5 I on the other hand did catch anything bigger than maybe 2#s.
